At a glance

This is Loutraki's municipal thermal spring, a circular bathhouse first built in 1921 and finished in its present form in 1934. The building sits on the Epar.Od. Loutrakiou–Mpisias road and draws on a natural mineral spring that has flowed through the area for thousands of years.

Inside, the walls and dome are covered in mosaics made in 1935–1936 by artist Stefanos Xenopoulos and his students. The scenes draw on Greek mythology: a Nereid greets arrivals at the entrance and another appears at the exit, a ring of columns surrounds the rock where the water emerges, and the dome above it shows the sun god Helios driving his four-horse chariot past a personification of Night. A separate panel depicts a dance of Dryads with satyrs playing music.

The spring water itself is classified as chloride-sodium, low-mineral, weakly alkaline (pH 7.2–7.3), hypotonic and mildly radioactive (14 Mache units), with a temperature between 30.4 and 34.46 degrees Celsius. Locally the water has long been associated with relief for arthritis, chronic rheumatism, disc problems, kidney and gallstones, chronic constipation, high blood pressure, bladder conditions, diabetes and digestive complaints, among others, though this reflects traditional local use rather than a clinical guarantee.

The site is set up as a straightforward day visit rather than a resort spa: it's family friendly, priced in the affordable tier, and takes walk-ins. It's open Wednesday through Sunday, closed Monday and Tuesday.
