Hyotan Onsen sits in Kannawa, the steam-wreathed hot-spring quarter of Beppu, and has operated since 1922. The baths run on gensen-juwari, 100 percent unblended spring water delivered kake-nagashi style, meaning it flows through continuously rather than being recirculated or diluted. Walk-ins are welcome and a day pass is available, so there's no need to book ahead or hold hotel status to soak.

Beyond the bathing hall, a foot bath greets visitors at the entrance, cooled using a bamboo system called yuametake that the facility developed itself. A steam-inhalation room off the courtyard lets bathers breathe spring vapor one at a time, said to help the throat and skin. A drinking fountain in the courtyard, named Ieki no Yu ("fortune spring"), pours the same source water for drinking; local lore holds that good things happen on days with an 8 in the date, and the water is also credited with easing constipation and chronic stomach trouble.

A restaurant area serves Oita-sourced food under the "onsen meshi" banner, including jigoku-mushi (hell-steamed) set meals, a tori-ten set, kabosu udon, and a seafood sampler, with menu prices running roughly from 1,100 to 3,900 yen. A relaxation lounge with expanded seating gives families and groups somewhere to linger after bathing.

The spa is about ten minutes by car from Beppu IC, or 25 minutes by bus from Beppu Station, near the entrance to Kannawa. It's open daily from 9 a.m. to midnight, though hours occasionally shift for maintenance work, so checking recent notices before a visit is worthwhile.
