Temazcal Toop sits in San Agustín de las Juntas, a short drive from downtown Oaxaca, and centers on a ceremonial temazcal built around four doors representing fire, water, earth and air. Sessions run about an hour: volcanic stones are heated for hours beforehand, then steam infused with medicinal herbs like ruda, hierba maestra, poleo, albahaca and romero fills the dome as part of a ritual meant to work on body, mind and spirit at once.
After the sweat, there's an ice-water immersion tub on site, along with sauna and steam room amenities. The property also offers overnight rooms that can be rented by the day or longer, plus grill areas, kitchens and dining spaces so guests can cook their own meals rather than rely on a restaurant.
Beyond the standard ceremony, the spa runs postpartum temazcal sessions during the first forty days after birth, aimed at helping new mothers release retained fluid and fatigue, with herbal compresses and a closing Toltec hip massage. There are also sessions designed to prepare couples physically and emotionally for conception, plus cacao ceremonies and spiritual retreats for those wanting a deeper practice. The in-house team includes a doctor specializing in gynecology, a nurse, three physiotherapists, two masotherapy specialists and a curandero.
This is an adults-only, couples-oriented spa in the upscale tier, and reservations are required before showing up.
