At a glance

Shiroganeyu is the public bath at the heart of Ginzan Onsen, the Yamagata hot spring town known for its row of wooden three- and four-story ryokan lit by gas lamps. The bath keeps the plain, functional feel of the old toji (hot-spring cure) days, before the area became a destination for its Taisho-period streetscape.

The water is a sodium chloride-sulfate spring, the kind locally said to ease neuralgia, rheumatism, skin conditions, cuts and general fatigue. There's nothing elaborate here: it's a straightforward soak rather than a spa experience with extras, and admission is 500 yen for adults and 200 yen for children up to elementary school age.

It's open every day from 8:30am to 3:30pm, but closed on Wednesdays. No booking is needed; this is a walk-in bath, which fits the easy, low-key way most people move through the onsen town on foot.

Getting there takes a bit of planning if arriving by car. Cars are discouraged from entering the hot spring street itself, and the shared parking lot serving the area closes entirely in winter under snow. The usual workaround is to park at the Taisho Roman Hall lot and take the shuttle bus into town, which runs for a flat 500 yen per day.
